I.Becoming Friends With Your Clubs- A Commited Relationship.
Hey, do you LOVE golf? What about your golf clubs? How long
has it been since you've replaced them? Have you checked EBAY
for the latest deals? Trust me, Ebay's still got good stuff
at great prices if you wait around long enough. But, that's
not only in golf clubs- that's for almost every type of good
imaginable.
Say you are a beginner...you are learning the fundamentals
of golf. It's rough, we've all been there. But, you should
try to stick to the same pair of golf clubs for at least 1
to 2 years.
Why stick to the same clubs?
A.Using the same golf clubs will help your learning experience
progress be as linear & stable as possible. And, it helps
for comparisons too. Changing to new clubs can really change
your frame of reference.
B.Using the same clubs during your initial 2 years of golf
will also help minimize the negative variables that can affect
a game. You've got to know whether any errors you are getting
are being caused by you, your club, or the interaction between
them.
For example, by sticking with the same driver, you can isolate
& ADJUST the factors that help you drive farther when
teeing off. Who doesn't like that?
*This is one of the biggest golf
secrets around: changing clubs too often, especially during
this beginner period, will not allow the player to accurately
figure out whether their technique has improved as a result
of practice or not. There are too many factors!
This is definitely one area where Jr. High science lessons
can pay off. Scientists isolate, test, record & adjust....over
& over & over!
II. Variations of Clubs
Golf clubs come in many different styles & shapes. The
amount of loft a club gives the ball, the lie angle, &
the length can vary tremendously depending on the club.
Here's few things you should know:
A.Your driver is usually your longest golf club. It provides
the least amount for loft & the flattest swing plane.
B.The shortest club is generally the sand wedge. The sand
wedge provides the highest amount of loft & a very steep
swing plane.
Regardless, neither one of these are recommended for beginners.
The longest or shortest clubs aren't generally recommended
for beginners because their swing conditions the clubs' size
& build are unique.
III. The Best Club To Get Started With
Beginners can use any golf club that they want. But, we highly
recommend the 7-iron for players who are a little sketchy
on the basics & are still mastering their golf swings.
Why the 7 Iron?
Because it's just right. The 7 Iron is right up the middle
in terms of length & output. It is also much easier to
control than other golf clubs, especially the driver. It makes
for a great practice club.
Due to the 7-iron's swing plane & almost PERFECT amount
of loft, it makes an ideal golf club for learning a swing
for standard shots. And that's what most of us will be taking
anyway: average shots. We all average out sooner or later.
Or at least we hope to.
Some beginner golfers prefer other clubs during this part
of the "learning curve" (I'm talking educational
learning curve). While fun, they don't always make the best
use of your time. Which is really what you want out of practice.
For example, if you practice with a wedge, your ball will
result in a lot of backspin due to the high loft of the wedge.
This can lead to too many "hooks" or "slices."
The BOTTOM LINE is that problems in your swing will be difficult
to pinpoint if you use these clubs for practice when you are
1st starting out. Stick to the 7 iron beginners.
The 7-iron is great because you will easily be able to tell
if the ball is slicing, hooking, or actually going straight.
Because the 7-iron is easy to use, your confidence level in
making your shots will rise quickly and you will be able to
advance more rapidly.
