Why Am I Topping The Ball Off The Tee ?

We all have felt the frustration and, no doubt, embarrassment of topping the ball off the tee ( especially if it’s the first tee with an audience ) and been left wondering exactly what we might have done wrong.

There are a number of possible causes and these are three of the more common ones:

1)Incorrect Ball Position – If you are playing off the tee with the ball teed up and finding you are topping the ball it could be ball position. Either you are standing too far back or similarly you have the ball too far forward and you will be hitting the ball late in the swing with the club face therefore slightly elevated in the follow through and so hitting the top of the ball rather than hitting it square off the tee.

2)Not Checking Your Aim – If you aim too far right when teeing off you are likely to pull out of your shot a little early and too fast, pulling up and causing a reverse weight shift by having you caught too centred in your stance and this results in you topping the ball.

3)Too Much Turn in the Backswing – Turning excessively in the backswing will have you in a difficult position as you come through the shot to address the ball by making you swing too long, making it much harder to get the club back out in front of you in the correct manner in the follow through. The club will have to come from the outside to inside position as you complete your swing, pull you more towards the left and cause your weight shift to be reversed and then causing you to top the ball as you attempt to hit the ball correctly.

Another possible cause is having the ball too far back meaning you have to try and pull out of the shot a little early in order to hit the ball, causing some imbalance and again meaning you are topping the ball.

There is no doubt ball position is a vital part of ensuring you are not topping the ball as it affects all the elements of timing, correct weight shift and stance.

So when you are thinking about your game and trying to improve your golf, remember to always go back to the basics by checking your ball position and your stance. Then look at your swing and stay 3/4 limited turn rather than having yourself over-stretching and therefore losing composure. Rather, get back to a more limited turn and ensure correct ball position and the chances are you will be hitting the ball off the tee straight and true.
