The golf handicap has been around for a long time as a way of presenting a more challenging game for players of varying skill levels. The handicap is a means of removing strokes from your own score in a fair way that should leave you even with a player who is better than you but running on a lower handicap. If you were to have a round of golf now, do you know what your handicap is?
The par of a course is number of strokes a ’scratch golfer’ is expected to complete the course, a ’scratch golfer’ being a player with a 0 handicap. A handicap is how many strokes over that par score you are expected to make in a round of golf.
A round played under a handicap will measure improvement over skill as the handicap itself will remove the skill difference between the players. This means if you are playing against a better overall golfer with a lower handicap you are able to win the round by playing beyond your normal skill level even if that improvement is still not up to the standards of the better golfer.
The idea of the handicap system is to reward and encourage improvement. If you lower your own handicap you can feel that you are improving as a player and completing a round under your handicap makes you feel like you have player a good game. It also allows the game to remain friendly no matter the variation in skill between the players present, keeping an element of competition instead of taking it to a one horse race.
If you know the score in your last few rounds as well as the course rating you just need to subtract that score from your personal score and multiply the result by 113 to find your differential. The lowest of these differentials multiplies by 0.96 will leave you with your handicap index.
If a player knows their own handicap index they can easily calculate their handicap on any course that provides what is known a course slope. Find the course slope and divide it by 113 and multiply that by your handicap index. The number is how many strokes you are expected to get over par, your handicap.
If you are interested in calculating your score you just subtract or add the number of strokes either side of par you are. This means if you play over par you add the number of strokes over par and if you play under par you subtract the number of strokes under par. If you play to your handicap your final score should be equal to your handicap.
Golfers are always aiming to improve their handicap as it is a sign on an improvement in their own skills. When playing with another golfer just compare handicaps and you will be able to see without even getting on the fairway who is a more consistent golder, as a lower handicap is typically a sign of consistency. Often a single round includes factors such as luck and can often end up being a less than accurate representation.
