Perfect Golf Swing – Pre Shot Routine For All Levels Of Players

9:23 am August 1, 2010

The following is a nice little trick to maintaining a smooth unforced golf swing that was borrowed from the baseball world.

Over a single day I made a great connection between the perfect golf swing and a regular baseball swing based on two sport programs I had seen. The first was a baseball highlights show which had a brief segment about baseball players attending a golf event for charity. He remarked that many baseball players enjoy their golfing as they often find that they are long-drivers off the tee.

A few hours later the highlights from the PGA were being shown and Miguel Angel Jimenez was lining up for a regular pitch off of the fairway. What I noticed was that his pre-shot routine consisted of making about three swings that more closely resembled a baseball swing. His stance was quite upright and the club head never went closer than 12 inches to the ground. What I perceived was that the drill was promoting a loose swinging rhythmic golf swing.

Either way, I’ve incorporated into my pre-shot routine and it does help loosen up my golf swing and help get the sensation of coiling the core muscles like a spring – just like in baseball.

So Why Does This Work?

While a baseball swing and the perfect golf swing may be dissimilar in many ways there are some key elements relating to how powerful shots are made that are similar:

- A powerful swing starts in the legs. These are the anchor to the ground around which the swing takes place. Both swings require a stable stance.

- The stomach muscles are the powerhouse of the swing. As the body pivots it is essential that the back swing ratchets up the stomach muscles and that the hips start the transition from back swing into the down swing.

- If the core muscles are constrained or tense during the swing then the power of the shot is also hindered. The pre-shot routine aims to free up the muscles allowing the natural swing of the club to progress without forcing the core.

There are many elements to the perfect golf swing, perhaps too many. Making the effort to complete some practice swings in a baseball-swing style helps loosen up the core muscles and encourages a free-flowing golf swing. At the very least it is worth giving it a try next time you’re at the range.

Remember Your Golf Swing Fundamentals Before You Put Your Golf Game At Stake

9:33 am June 27, 2010

When it comes to sports or any other skills that needs mastery, we have a tendency to over complicate things than we really need to. This is no different when it comes to golf swing, since it’s one of the most important aspects of the game, we tend to over analyze every approach and every swing we take and that can sometimes leave us further away from the perfect golf swing.

Therefore, take a step back and review your golf swing fundamentals, find out why you’re swinging this way and if it is in line with what you used to remember. Understanding your fundamentals can be the key to a better game especially for beginners.

Below are some golf swing basic techniques that you will want to get it right:

One of the place to start is to find out whether you are using your arms to swing the clubs or are you using the correct way to swing a club which is by using your shoulders. Too many beginners end up using their arms to pull their golf club up from the ground, when that happens the club angle will end up being too straight instead.

The thing that gives you your ball the distance and power in every swing is what is known as a whip effect, and this can not be created as it should comes naturally when you use your shoulder to do the swinging instead of your arms. You are more likely to hit a bad shot when you use your arms because you can not control your club face angle when you land, thus you really would need to get this basic right and use your shoulders to guide instead of your arms.

Another popular mistakes committed by a lot of people is that they are actually trying to exert extra strength into their shots. While this might not necessarily be bad, it is when you do not have control of your clubs. Compromising your ability to control your clubs for more power is also why you will never be able to get the whip effect of every club; as such you will notice that different clubs actually have different loft and length.

Simply by understanding which clubs to use for what type of shot, you will get the perfect shot in terms of trajectory and the distance that is associated with it. Thus always remember that you are not playing a game of might, instead you should concentrate on getting the swing right and creating the whip effect that will help carry your ball to a longer distance. Exerting pressure or strength in your shot can lead to you losing your balance and not able to get the best out of every shot.

Improve Your Game With Golf Swing Drills

7:36 am June 4, 2010

One thing that is synonym with the best known names in the sporting world is hard work, dedication and hours of practice to improve their game. Every world famous athlete, not matter their talent must go through endless hours of practicing to get to their level of performance.

So, why are you not practicing? By putting in the hours of practicing and hard work, you will gain consistency which will be reflected in your game. Therefore do make sure you take the time to run regular golf swing drills that can help review and improve on your game.

No doubt that practice can improve your current skills, but you also want to make sure that you’re doing the proper practice that will actually help your swings instead of decreasing your skills. Here are some things to keep in mind for better golf swings:

Many times beginners are told to run their golf swing drills in their own backyard instead of being in a proper driving range. Here’s how it can hurt you, by not actually hitting a golf ball! Think about it, if your goal is to get down the course and hit a 250 yards drive this weekend, what makes you think that swinging in the air is going to actually translate your ability to do so when it comes down to the real game?

The reason why it is that way is because by just swinging your club at the air, you miss the most important point of practicing, which is to actually make the best contact possible with a golf ball. No doubt by learning in your backyard can get your fundamentals such as your grip and stance correct, but if you truly want to excel in game, nothing can replace practicing it in a real driving range.

Making solid ball contact aside, you will also need to make sure that you’re not ruining your game by forgetting your basics. Be sure that with every back swing, your shoulders are guiding your clubs instead of your arms.

Lastly, if you’re just looking to correct your back swing, you can do so without a golf ball, but be sure that your concentration at this time is at the movement of your body, learn how to properly align your body to the club and make sure that you’re standing properly too.

Know About The Best Ways To Improve Your Golf Swing

7:34 am April 1, 2010

You must know that golf is really a great game that you can enjoy with your friends during your leisure time. This great game is played with a club and balls and special golf courses are designed for it. In order to win the game a player needs hit the wall into the small holes which can be found in the golf course. In the golf course you would usually find either eighteen or nine holes.

In this article, my main focus would be to give you some great tips to improve your golf swing.

1. Your grip is very important

If you want to win many games then you must possess a good grip that is very important for a good swing. If you have a good grip then you would be able to aim straight and high.

a. Many famous golfers use the overlapping grip because in this grip the middle finger of the right hand rightly grips the index finger of your left hand.

b. This grip involves the interlocking of the little finger of your right hand with the index finger of your left hand.

c. This grip is not much preferred as it involves only the touching of the little figure of the right hand with the index figure of the left hand.

2. You must adopt the correct stance

A correct stance position should be adopted by you if you really want to improve your golf swing. You must always equally balance your weight so that there is no pressure on the ball. For a great swing your spine should be erect but your knees and hips should bend a little.

3. Try to position your self correctly

To get that perfect swing you must try to position yourself in the right manner. You must try to imagine yourself in a straight and accurate line.

4. Performing the backswing

If you want to perform backswing you must always try to keep your left hand completely safe. You must maintain a good tempo while you are performing the backswing.

5. Performing the downswing

You must try to keep your head in the same position while you are performing a downswing. Keep your head behind the ball but do not generate power with your right hand.

Well above stated are some highly important suggestions that can really help you to improve your golf swing.

Simple Golfing Performance Tips For Amateurs

3:15 pm March 11, 2010

The modern-day golfer has a support team of nutritionists, therapists, their caddy and various mentors to optimize their playing ability during a championship. Their training regime, as with many professional athletes, is focused on building up levels of energy, strength and flexibility. While the average amateur will not usually have the time to put in the same level of off-course training, they can benefit from the following key pillars of on-course performance optimization techniques that the pro golfers use.

Hydration

If you watch professional golfers on the course you will witness them drinking water throughout the 18 holes. The key point to staying hydrated is to take sips of water while golfing. Once you start feeling thirsty it has become too late as this is a sign that your body is performing in a sub-optimum manner.

You could use sugar/caffeine drinks but be aware that this causes fluctuations in blood sugar levels that can cause similar peaks and troughs in how you play (for example, over hitting greens on one hole, short putting on the next).

Nutrition

Filling your car with high quality fuel makes it run/perform better. Likewise, the food you eat before and during a golfing round will affect the energy levels and performance you will experience. Golfing professionals are like other athletes in that they take several small meals each day to keep their energy levels consistent.

Once they are on the course, the caddy ensures the energy levels stay topped up by offering their player bananas or other fruit (bananas are best due to their slow energy release).

Stretches

Professional golfers use various stretching techniques and exercises such as Pilates and Yoga to improve their overall flexibility. In particular, staying flexible in the core muscle area (tummy and lower back) is essential to keeping the backswing consistent and reducing the risk of injury.

For the average golfer performing some simple stretches (lower back, legs & calves) prior to a round of golf will help warm the muscles up and reduce the risk of the back/legs stiffening up toward the end of a round.

Awareness

These simple pillars of performance are not rocket science. However, it is important to be actively aware of what your body is telling you during a round of golf so that you may remedy it the next time.

Feeling thirsty or becoming tired during golf are indications that you are not getting the water and food your body needs. Receiving muscle strain is a sign that your muscles are being over worked and would have a better chance of handling the exertion if you performed some stretching exercises.

Practising your golf swing at the range is one way of perfecting your game, but you should also aim to improve your golfing performance through nutrition, hydration and stretches.

A Simple Pre-game Putting Drill For Amateur Golfers

5:11 am March 7, 2010

One problem I see frequently with a lot of amateur golfers is their lack of effective putting practice before a round of golf. They often make the same putting mistakes over the opening 6 holes of a round. Mistakes such as the following:

The amateur putts the ball well short of the hole The amateur putts the ball in a direction they had not intended (i.e. without accuracy) The amateur putts the ball past the hole

For all amateur golfers, performing a 5 minute drill before going to the first tee can really pay off in your match. The following is a short drill that will give you confidence in the alignment of your putting and in your assessment of the speed of the greens.

Alignment

To zone in on correct alignment, you should try lining yourself up for a 10 foot putt on the practice green. Put one of your irons (say a 5 iron) down at your toes once you feel you are lined up correctly. Now look down the length of the iron on the ground. Is the alignment correct? Is the club pointing accurately towards the hole? If not, then try changing how you line up a putt. Pick a point to aim for that is closer to your ball, rather than closer to the hole.

Distances

With any practice drill for putting distance you want to focus on getting a feel for the greens speed over short, medium and long distances.

Begin with a long putt. Try to make 8 to 12 of these putts and focus on making the distance the ball travels as close as possible to the correct length to establish long green speed.

Next choose a medium length putt around the 10 foot distance and preferably a distance which you experience often. Again, take up to 10 practice putts and try to get to within a meter of the hole. Being accurate is important with this drill so you wish to have some putts going in.

Lastly, pick some short putts within one to two meters of the hole. You will want to get a confidence boost here by seeing a high percentage of putts going in.

Using these simple drills helps to fine-tune your putting accuracy and distance control before you head to the first tee and allows you to leave your mistakes on the practice green, rather than the course.
