Dealing With Downhill Slopes on a Golf Course

2:11 pm March 7, 2010

Where I lived in a region with rolling hills of Scotland, I would sporadically play golf on a course that was on the face of a large hill. Besides a couple of holes, the bulk of them were either perpendicular uphill or downhill. It had been these holes with downhill slopes that gave me loads of difficulty.

For all those of you which have played a course like that, you almost certainly know how difficult hitting from a downhill lie can be. This is particularly difficult for recreational players, who’ve not much practice hitting from this type of lie. Hitting off a down slope is essentially a matter of making the suitable modifications. Here are some adjustments that should allow you to play from a downward slope.

Consequence for a Downward Slope Shot

Fundamentally, you have to position the ball back in your position, swing with the slope, and chase the golf ball down the slope. There are two things to bear in mind when confronted with a downward lie; a shot from a downward slope tends to fade right plus the slope will influence your golf club selection. Even if you hit the ball cleanly, it is going to have a tendency to fade right, accordingly learn cope it by aiming slightly left of your target.

Golf Club Selection for the Downward Slope

A downward slope influences the balls distance and height, therefore you need to make changes with your club choice. A downhill slope will reduce the loft in the club so that the ball flies lower and more. If you would usually hit a 6-iron for the distance to your target, try hitting an 8-iron. The amount of adjustment, or how much less club you will require, depends on the inclination of the slope. Only personal experience can tell you how much more club to hit.

Change Your Set-up

To effectively strike a golf ball from the down slope, you’ll need to make a few adjustments. Probably the most important thing to undertake is maintain your balance; that means ensuring your spine is vertical with the slope plus your weight is on your leading foot. As a consequence, your shoulders and hips will lean downward to correspond with the lie of the land.

The set up position for the downhill slope is achieved by moving your front foot down the hill so that the golf ball position shall be further to the rear than customary. An additional concern with down hill lies is the swing path; to generate more height, hit down and along the incline of the slope, as if you’re chasing the ball downhill. What’s more, do not allow the transfer of weight get beyond control at impact. Stay as well balanced as viable by taking a shorter than standard swing, and close with a smooth follow through. Clear your left hip as you swing down and through the ball assists with the follow through also. These modifications will assure pure contact with the ball.

Up Hill Lies

These modifications in your set-up and swing mirror those needed for uphill lies. With uphill lies, the weight is on the back foot, the golf ball is positioned forward in the position, and the inclination is to pull the ball left. You will have to take less club on an up hill as the ball will fly higher and a shorter distance. Whether uphill or downhill, you must control your weight transfer and you need to swing down and using the slope.

Take these considerations into account the next time that you’re playing a undulating course. Just about all courses have sloping fairways even when they don’t seem to be particularly hilly. Therefore, it is a good suggestion to practice hitting off slopes, whether downhill, uphill, or side lies.

A Simple Pre-game Putting Drill For Amateur Golfers

5:11 am

One problem I see frequently with a lot of amateur golfers is their lack of effective putting practice before a round of golf. They often make the same putting mistakes over the opening 6 holes of a round. Mistakes such as the following:

The amateur putts the ball well short of the hole The amateur putts the ball in a direction they had not intended (i.e. without accuracy) The amateur putts the ball past the hole

For all amateur golfers, performing a 5 minute drill before going to the first tee can really pay off in your match. The following is a short drill that will give you confidence in the alignment of your putting and in your assessment of the speed of the greens.

Alignment

To zone in on correct alignment, you should try lining yourself up for a 10 foot putt on the practice green. Put one of your irons (say a 5 iron) down at your toes once you feel you are lined up correctly. Now look down the length of the iron on the ground. Is the alignment correct? Is the club pointing accurately towards the hole? If not, then try changing how you line up a putt. Pick a point to aim for that is closer to your ball, rather than closer to the hole.

Distances

With any practice drill for putting distance you want to focus on getting a feel for the greens speed over short, medium and long distances.

Begin with a long putt. Try to make 8 to 12 of these putts and focus on making the distance the ball travels as close as possible to the correct length to establish long green speed.

Next choose a medium length putt around the 10 foot distance and preferably a distance which you experience often. Again, take up to 10 practice putts and try to get to within a meter of the hole. Being accurate is important with this drill so you wish to have some putts going in.

Lastly, pick some short putts within one to two meters of the hole. You will want to get a confidence boost here by seeing a high percentage of putts going in.

Using these simple drills helps to fine-tune your putting accuracy and distance control before you head to the first tee and allows you to leave your mistakes on the practice green, rather than the course.

Some Ideas On Understanding The Golf Swing When You Play

7:16 am March 1, 2010

If you are taking up golf and you want to be able to perform as well as you possibly can then understanding the golf swing is going to be key to your success. If you are not able to develop a good swing then you will never be able to perform well on a consistent basis. Here are some thoughts on the golf swing and what makes it tick.

First of all off the tee you need to focus on power but also that speed can kill your shot. When you strike the ball you are transferring the energy from the swing into the ball and therefore the harder you hit it the further it will go.

Yet this is not necessarily what you are looking for if you are constantly going to be hitting the ball miles off to the left or right. You need to maintain a solid body position your legs about shoulder width apart. When you swing back stay in control and keep your arms locked solid and rotate your hips. On the downswing bring your hips back straight and hit through the ball with your arms staying straight throughout.

When it comes to shorter iron shots the emphasis will be on spin as well in order to make sure that the ball sticks on the green and does not go rolling off to the side. You need to open your stance a little bit and make sure that you swing it under the ball and that you do not roll over it as you would with a drive or wood shot.

By doing this you will allow the wrists to go in more of an upwards motion rather than rolling over the top of the ball. This will allow you to get backspin.

Now when it comes to the green your putting will rely on friction and gravity. You are going to be letting those forces do the work and your judgement will be more important than your swing that needs to be easy and solid throughout the putt.

Golf Swing Instructions And Tips

12:17 pm February 15, 2010

There is no better feeling than swinging through a golf ball and having hit a straight solid shot down the middle of the fairway. Fellow players will be jealous indeed when you start to improve your swing and reduce your score over the next few rounds. Learning how to swing a golf club the right way can improve the casual golfers game greatly if mistakes are avoided and the proper amount of practice is given.

There is a three-step process to swinging a golf club. First the back swing, second the forward swing, and lastly the follow through. Examining each of these parts will help eliminate the usual problems many golfers encounter.

During the back-swing, try not to pick the club up too quickly off the ground. Let the club sweep across the ground smoothly as it rises into the air letting the head of the club draw a circle starting at the ball location and ending with the shaft and club head parallel to the ground and pointing at the target. Keep your posture steady throughout the back-swing taking special care to keep your head down looking at the ball and shifting your weight from your center to your right hip and foot.

The second part of your swing is the forward motion. Your body-weight will shift from your back foot to your front foot while at the same time smoothly bringing the club head forward in a clock-like motion increasing its velocity as it approaches the ball. At the moment of impact, the greatest part of your body-weight will be on your front foot and at this point you will commence your follow through.

Your swing’s follow-through is just as important as the other two parts. Make sure not to underestimate the significance of this part of your swing. After impact, try to rotate your torso to face the target and move your head to look down the line of your shot. During this rotation of your torso, you will start to move your right foot lifting the heel, rotating, and finally balancing your stance with your right foot’s toes.

Practicing in front of a mirror can be a good exercise. In order to perform this exercise properly however, you should practice each portion of the swing separately, then as whole. Pay close attention to your posture, the club head sweeping the ground and the shift of your weight from one side of the body to the other.

Be sure to pick up a shag bag and dedicate yourself to consistent practice. Adjusting to your swing changes may take some time, but it is well worth the effort if it provides your golf game with more consistent play. Swinging a golf club will seem much more natural and easy once you’ve worked out some of the kinks.

After quite a bit of practicing, you will find that your golf swing has become much more consistent. Keeping your swing consistent is the key to playing quality golf. Before you know it, all your friends will be asking you for golf swing instructions.

A Simple Swing to Improve Your Golf Swing

11:13 am

The game of golf requires control, consistency, and accuracy in striking the ball and driving it towards your intended target. For this to happen, golfers must achieve the perfect golf swing needed in each stage of the game. As the objective of the game is to have fewer strokes at each hole, you will probably need to improve your golf swing.

The Perfect Golf Swing Does Not Exist!

When talking about how to improve your golf swing, it is generally assumed that we are talking about the conventional or traditional swing. Trying to achieve the perfect golf swing with this style is a very difficult task. The majority of PGA Tour pros use the traditional swing; if it was easy to master you wouldn’t see them slicing or hooking their ball into the trees.

Perfect Impact is what Matters

Most PGA professionals have somewhat unconventional golf swings. What counts though, is how they make perfect impact and not about the perfect golf swing. If you have taken golf instruction or read a golf swing book, you will have realized that there are many factors that make up the golf swing and for the beginner golfer it can seam unattainable to put all these factors together consistently.

You have to concentrate on finishing the backswing with your driver parallel to the ground and pointing towards the target, cocking your wrist at the right time, and the weight shift to start your downswing. The alternative would be to simplify your golf swing.

A Simple Golf Swing

Like many golfers, I have struggled to dominate the traditional swing. I then read about a simple golf swing that has fewer movements to it and so decided to give it a go. Believe me, it was the best decision I had made as my golf game is now more consistent and I have better accuracy and more distance.

A Solid Foundation

To improve your golf swing the first components to master are the right way to setup, the grip, and the alignment. If you don’t learn these basics first, it doesn’t matter what style of golf swing you use, your results will definitely not be a perfect swing.

A “New” Perfect Golf Swing

Just by learning how to put into practice the simple swing I now have a “perfect golf swing”. Okay, it might not be as beautiful as Tiger Woods golf swing, but it gives me the results that I wanted. Essentially, I use a shorter back swing, less sideways movement, more pivoting around the spine, and I move all my body parts involved in coordination by keeping them coupled together.

Finding a swing that actually works for you is the only way to improve your golf swing. This simple swing method will make for a repeatable golf swing and will result in a more consistent and accurate game on the course. Amazingly, this simple golf swing can be learned and put into practice in a very short period of time – try out the simple swing today!

Fix A Slice And Hit A Golf Ball Straight Every Time

2:14 pm January 12, 2010

If you have a swing fault that makes you hit slices or hooks then you need to learn how to hit a ball straight of the tee. Apart from the satisfaction of hitting the ball down the middle of the fairway, you will also increase your distance of the tee. What’s more, you will find yourself with an easier second shot to the green when you are nicely positioned in the middle of the fairway.

So why do so many golfers struggle to hit a golf ball straight? First, we have to understand why the golf ball moves to the right (a slice) or to the left (a hook). After you have learned how to fix a slice or a hook, you can then move on to how to hit a draw (a controlled shot that moves to the left) and how to hit a fade (a controlled shot that moves to the right.)

The following descriptions and instruction deals with the slice; for the hook everything is generally reversed. A slice is created by a significant tilt of the spin-axis of the golf ball to the right, or a clockwise spin. A slice usually ends up right of the target line, and the term is often used when the curve in the trajectory is extreme and unintentional. The less extreme version of a slice is called a “fade”.

In the basics of the golf swing, if you want to hit the ball squarely and hit a golf ball straight every time, you must return the club head to the original spot at the impact position. The slice is caused when you leave the club face open when striking the ball, which makes the ball spin in a clockwise movement. The swing path is normally correct but the ball is not struck squarely at impact, mostly because of a “weak grip.”

If you can not hit a golf ball straight, then the first thing to look at is your grip. It doesn’t matter what type of grip you prefer (an interlocking grip, an overlapping grip, or a ten finger grip) the factor that can affect the balls flight path is the strength of the grip. If you want to fix a slice, try moving your hands around to the right into a stronger grip position.

Other factors that can cure a slice are the grip pressure; don’t grip the club so tightly that the muscles of the wrist and forearms are tense. Try to increase the speed of your golf swing, not only will that add more distance it can also cut down on the amount of slice that you impart on the golf ball. The flex of the clubs shaft can also affect your shots; big hitters will need a stiff or extra stiff shaft, medium hitters should use a firm or regular flex, and shorter hitters should use a senior or ladies flex.

The setup position is also important if you want to hit a golf ball straight. Keep everything square and parallel to the target. Your feet, hips, and shoulders should all be parallel to the target line. With a driver, place the ball opposite the instep of the left foot and don’t stand too close or too far away from the ball – the sole of the club should be grounded and not tilting forwards or backwards.

Remember all the swing basics that you were taught; feet shoulder width apart, knees slightly flexed, spine straight and chin up, and keep your eyes on the ball. There is no time for detailed golf swing instruction here but just try to keep your club on the same plane from your back swing to your downswing. Whatever you do, don’t try to over hit the golf ball – maintain the same swing speed during your complete golf swing.

Lastly, there are an other two types of swing faults that will prevent you to hit a golf ball straight – the push and the pull. As opposed the slice, the push shot happens when the ball shoots straight off to the right, and the pull is when the ball goes straight off to the left. The push is a result of an incorrect golf swing when the club goes through an in-to-out plane, and the pull is an out-to-in swing plane. The push or pull shot comes about due to an improper golf swing action and forgetting the basics of the golf swing.
