The less lofted the face of a golf
club is, the less backspin it will add to the ball (this is the reason
why a long-iron will cause the ball to fly much lower than a
pitching-wedge will).
So, how do I know if my alignment is off?
Let’s find out.
For a true reading of your clubface’s alignment at impact, hit some
shots with your driver. Any ball curvature indicates how you may be
delivering the clubface at impact.
The shots are “looking right” of target (open) if they mostly curve to
the right & they are “looking left” of target (closed) if the shots
mostly curve to the left.
To assess your clubhead path, hit some shots with your 9 iron.
Because the strong backspin created by its steeply-pitched face
negates most of the sidespin, the shots should head toward their
starting direction. Little to no curvature should be observed.
If they start mostly to the left, your clubhead path obviously is from
“out-to-in.” If they mostly start to the right, you are probably
swinging from “in-to-out.”

Question: But why are my driver shots finishing to the right & my
short-irons finishing to the left?
Answer: The interaction of backspin & sidespin is the answer.
The truth is that the attack on the ball – out-to-in & open-faced –
remains constant. But, as you move up into the loftier clubs, the
countering of sidespin by the increasing backspin simply disguises
the clubface error.
What it comes down to is: The ball’s flight direction will indicate

When The Clubface Faces Right

(”open” in golf terminology) may be caused by the clubhead

Swinging the clubhead in excess from in-to-out will flatten the angle
of the clubhead’s attack. This can also lead to either fat or thin shots
like in #B above.
Looking Directly At The Target
Delivering the clubface to the ball directly on target (”square” in golf
terms) is done correctly when the clubhead moves momentarily
“along” (rather than across) the target line during impact.
When the swing path momentarily matches the target line during
impact, the clubhead should arrive at the ball at just the right angle.
Not too steep nor too shallow. This should deliver the entire force of
the blow forward in a perfect line…

moves. Better yet, have him videotape your swing so that you can
determine the real changes that are needed.
Remember, you want your club to point directly towards the target
& your swing to be on the correct plane.
If you are a right-handed golfer, then check to see if the club is
pointing to the left of your target. If so, then the club is considered to
be “layed off” which will often result in a slice.
When the club is pointing to the right of your target, then you have
“crossed over” which may result in a hook.
With a little work & practice, you can fine tune your backswing so
that the clubhead will always be pointing directly towards your
target.
Adjustments like this, my friend, will help you get well on your way
to a lower score.

8. You must always follow through once the ball has been hit and is
soaring towards the target. If you do not follow through, you risk
injuries to the arms and torso, as well as decreasing the speed of the
ball.

Making Contact
A. Let’s Do It
Congratulations, your swing is now fully initiated, from backswing
to downswing.
We’ve come so far!
It’s now time to make contact with the ball & follow through with
technique.
The contact you make with the ball and the direction (and loft) that it
takes is determined here. If you are going for a straight shot, then the
clubhead must move directly within the target line. If you want your
ball to go left, then the path of the clubhead should point left, and
vice versa, for the right.
Now, at first, it’s not that easy to learn how to correctly steer your
clubhead in relation to where you want the ball to go. This takes
thousands of shots to master.
The downswing will ultimately release your power into the ball.
The hands and forearms should rotate slightly counterclockwise (for
right-handed golfers).
The clubhead then rotates toward the ball until it’s close to
perpendicular to your target line.
B. The Power of Visualization
By visualizing the proper technique, you will better execute the
release of your clubhead.
Imagine your right forearm rotating over your left forearm (for righthanded
golfers) as you make your swing. Once you make contact
with the ball, the right hand and forearm should be gradually turning
towards your left. The backside of your left hand should be facing
the direction of the target line after impact.
And finally, the backside of your right hand should be pointing
skyward.
C. The Follow Through
Every swing results in a “follow through.” This describes what your
club, and the body, looks like after making impact with the ball.
Although the ball is well on its way flying through the air, you still
need to rotate your body and the club in a smooth and graceful
fashion.
Imagine if you suddenly stopped all movement as soon as the ball is
hit. This would reduce clubhead speed (because you would have to
slow before impact).
Not to mention that it might injure you too! Your wrists and hands
are delicate instruments.
Once your swing is done, your hips should be turned just enough so
that your stomach area is facing the target. Most of your weight
should be transferred to the left foot and your right foot should be on
its toes. Your back should be somewhat straight and the club will be
wrapped around the back of your shoulders.
D. Last Minute Tip
Once your body has stopped moving and your follow through is
complete, practice remaining in that position for a few seconds after
each shot. Not only can you watch the flight path of the ball, but if
your body remains still without tilting over, it’s a good sign that you
maintained perfect balance & coordination with the shot.
