Few realize it but if you want to improve your golf game all you have to do is improve your swing technique. Ask just about any golfer and they’ll tell you that developing good swing technique from the outset is crucial. Once you develop a good swing you want to practice, practice, and practice some more. If your handicap is astronomical and you can’t remember the last time you hit par read the tips below on developing better swing technique.
Don’t try to drive the ball 300 yards every time you swing… sounds silly but you’d be amazed how many guys are out there doing just that. Trying to crush the ball every time you hit it will result in a lot of bad shots. It’s a much better idea to take a smooth and relaxed swing at the ball and to focus on accuracy.
Focus on your breathing and take a nice and smooth swing. You don’t want to destroy the ball you merely want to hit it on a line. This would also be a good time to strongly consider strictly using your 3 wood for teeing off rather then using your driver. The driver or 1 wood is the longest club in your bag and it also has the largest head of any club (forcing you to move the ball further up off the ground to strike it) and these things both make it harder to hit the ball accurately.
Address the ball properly. The one thing that determines the ball flight path is the manner in which your clubface strikes the ball upon impact. If your clubface is open or closed or at an angle when you strike the ball then the ball will not go straight.
You want to approach the ball looking like a linebacker playing football getting ready to run in any direction with your kneees bent and your back slightly arched with your body leaning slightly forward.
Since it’s your clubface that determines in which direction your ball will go you want to make sure your clubface is facing in the direction you want the ball to go. So if you’re aiming for the hole line your clubface up with the hole and then line it up directly behind your golf ball. In your minds eye you should see an imaginary line between your ball and the hole and your clubface should be perpendicular to that.
When you begin your swing I don’t recommend taking the club too far back as this only results in inaccuracy. The key is to return the club to the exact position that you started off with your initial address of the ball. If you can do that you can hit a straight shot.
Golf is a game that is all about precision and accuracy. It does you no good to drive the ball 300 yards if you’re driving it on to the next hole over. Some of the best advice I ever got on the golf course was to take an easy and relaxed swing and to stop trying to crush the ball. Remember the key is to connect a golf ball with the sweet spot on the clubface and that is much easier to accomplish with an easy and relaxed swing.
