How To Choose The Right Golf Iron

1:36 pm July 28, 2010

When it comes to golfing most beginners tend to have problems with their iron selection. Since this is a critical part of the game the right choice is essential. During this particular article I will outline the basic mechanics of the golf iron, how to figure out distance and how weather makes the choice that much harder.

Every single golf iron in your club set would essentially go the same distance but the angle of the club face changes not only the distance but alters the flight path as well. A typical three iron has a degree angle around twenty one which encouraged the golf ball to fly at a lower height and for a longer distance. On the opposite end of the spectrum there is the nine iron which is around 41 degrees which will send the ball flying much harder and not as far as lowered numbered clubs.

For a beginner golfer the best way to figure out your iron distance is to head for the golf range with your five iron. Measure your distance over a series of shots to figure out what your average is. Now for each lower iron add ten yards for example if your five iron averages 150 yards the four iron would average 160 yards and the three iron should travel around 170 yards. For the higher clubs minus ten yards so the six iron is 140 yards and the seven iron is 130 yards and so on. Needless to say this is not a perfect system but is should give you an indicator of your range.

The problem with club selection is that weather will have a huge impact on the iron that you select. If your seven iron is traveling 130 yards a head on wind is going to shorten this distance due to the high flight path of the golf ball. If this is the case chances are you will want to lose a lower club which does not fly as high and will hopefully be able to cover the desired distance.

Every golfer on the planet wants to have complete control over their scoring irons and as you improve the high value and importance of these clubs will become more apparent. When you are just beginning it is essential that you develop a swing that is consistent and can be used on all the clubs in your bag. Remember that golf is a game and it is suppose to be a good time so appreciate the time spent on the course and stop fretting on what appears on your scorecard.
