Hitting Long Golf Drives – What You Need to Know

9:50 am October 26, 2009

The tee is where every golf hole starts. If you’re having trouble driving, then you’re starting every single hole scrambling. You might save a bunch of pars with a great short game, but you could well be putting for birdies if your drive had been a bit longer.

For the majority of golfers, being consistent with the driver and hitting long golf drives are far from being impossible. Being long off the tee is easier than most golfers realize.

Modern golf equipment means golf balls today get the best distance from launching on a high trajectory and having a shallower angle of descent. It’s not about wormburners anymore. Long drives now come from high launch and long carry.

Sure, with their 120 plus mph swing speeds and clean striking, pros still manage to launch the ball high, even with low lofted drivers. For the majority of club players though, using higher lofted drivers will encourage both distance and precision. The majority of club golfers would For the majority of club golfers, drivers with with a loft of between 11 to 14 degrees will give the best results.

Fitting the proper driver shaft is crucial when it comes to being consistent with the driver. The shaft has a vital part to play in all your clubs but the effects of playing the wrong shaft in your driver are magnified.

The majority of golfers now play graphite shafts in their drivers. Sadly, many golfers also play shafts that are too stiff for their swing speeds. That might be where the most common fault in golf, the slice, comes from. Use a shaft that is too stiff and you’ll in all probability hit a slice.

This has a lot to do with the common fallacy that graphite shafts are too soft. That could well have been true 10 years ago, but advanced graphite shaft designs have given us exceptional models with very uniform playing characteristics.

A medium torque, light-weight driver shaft would give the best results for nearly all golfers. Using a lighter shaft will increase your swing speed and the medium torque will allow the shaft to load properly during the swing, delivering more energy into your drives. Greater carries come from this energy.

The stiffness of the shaft’s tip will also influence the trajectories. A shaft which is overly tip-stiff will have an unwanted effect on your drive carry as the launch angles will suffer. Launching the ball on the optimum angle is where a long golf drive comes from. Bear in mind, we’re looking for a powerful flight, not a low worm burner.

Matching your driver head and shaft specifications to your swing is the most significant part of consistently long golf drives. Your clubs should help your game, not work against you.
