Golf – Mastering the Mental Game

Mastering the mental game of golf is absolutely essential to being a top competitor. If you play strictly for fun and aren’t interested in competing in high stakes games, then you may do fine just as you are. But anyone who wants to enter some serious competition should not neglect to put all the necessary time they can into mastering their ‘inner’ game. For winning consistently, it’s crucial.

Some of the best golfers ever have argued that the mental game is the most important. They put it above any physical ability you may have. They claim that if you have a better mental game, it can actually make up for any lack in your physical game. And if your physical game is strong, it can be undermined by a weak mental game. So it pays to learn how to master this side of the game of golf.

Nearly everyone that plays has to overcome the thoughts of failing. In some circles this is known as performance anxiety. It can be extremely distracting and cause your game to suffer. It takes practice and discipline to keep these negative thoughts out of your way while you focus on a good result. This will set you on your way to what is known as ‘peak performance’.

Mastering the mental game of golf involves visualization. Learning to visualize everything from your entrance to the tee-off will help you to get where you want to go. From the tee to the hole you must be able to block out everything else and see your swing and the ball going to the hole. Learning ‘how’ to win is just as important as having the ability to physically win. It can literally make you or break you as a golfer.

Getting yourself mentally tough is another thing to work on. This means getting to the point where no matter what type of distraction happens along the way; your focus isn’t altered by it. You still maintain the ability to step up to the ball and take your best shot with full focus. It takes practice, and there are many who never master it. But it’s well worth doing and the payoff is huge. Most people think in terms of big distractions, when so many of them can be ever so small.

Some people struggle with ‘Anger’. This is a hard one to overcome if you truly have a problem with it. It only takes a couple of bad shots and you can put yourself out of the game, simply being unable to focus due to anger. A cool head is the one that prevails, or at least gives you the best chance to succeed. Overcoming anger is a ‘must do’ if you intend on competing at a high level.

A positive attitude throughout the match is an asset that can’t be overstated. The proper attitude will allow you to implement all the other things you’ve learned. It enables you to keep that positive focus in the face of negative circumstances. A calm relaxed focus is what you want, not a focus that feels too pressured. You’ve heard those players that say, “I thrive on pressure”. Well, I wouldn’t put much store in that. They’re probably just practicing positive confession to help them with their own mental attitude toward it.

Understanding the mental game of golf can also be a fun and rewarding part of the game. Watching yourself as you get better at this part of the game gives you a feeling of accomplishment. But along with this mental game, you can’t forget about the physical aspect of the game either. It’s being able to combine the two will ultimately let you play to your best ability.
